News and Notes from the Director
Deep Sequencing Added to Shared Resources
The Cancer Center is pleased to announce the addition of "RNA and DNA Deep Sequencing Instrumentation" to its Genomics and Microarray Shared Resource. The new equipment, an Illumina Genome Analyzer IIx with Cluster Station and Paired End Module, will:
- Help researchers pinpoint genetic mutations and variations associated with phenotypes
- Determine the genomic locations bound by specific DNA-binding proteins
- Identify and quantify differences in mRNA expression as a function of environmental conditions
- Characterize wild populations of organisms in distinct ecosystems
The Genomics and Microarray Shared Resource is one of 12 Cancer Center Shared Resources that provide specialized equipment, services, and centralized consultation for Dartmouth investigators.
May is Melanoma Awareness Month
Melanoma accounts for a small percentage of skin cancer, but it is far more dangerous than other skin cancers. However, it is almost always curable when it is detected early. The Section of Dermatology at DHMC and Norris Cotton Cancer Center are using the month of May to increase awareness of melanoma and skin cancer prevention. A Melanoma Awareness Day will be held at DHMC on Thursday, May 21, 2009, from 4:00 - 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and includes short talks, educational displays, and free materials on sun safety and tanning. Presentations are also scheduled for students at several area high schools to inform them about the importance of sun safety and skin cancer awareness.
Cancer Survivors Day at AVA Gallery
Celebrate Cancer Survivors Day with Norris Cotton Cancer Center. On Sunday, May 31, from 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. at the AVA Gallery and Art Center in Lebanon, NH, Norris Cotton Cancer Center will celebrate with art, live music, chair massage, Reiki, and refreshments. On Tuesday, June 9, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m., Norris Cotton Cancer Center will celebrate in Manchester, NH, together with Catholic Medical Center, in the Forcier Auditorium at CMC.
