July 10, 2006
Listed in U.S.News & World Report for the fifth straight year
Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is listed among the top 50 hospitals for cancer care by U.S.News & World Report in its 2006 "America's Best Hospitals" issue. Norris Cotton Cancer Center is the only cancer care facility in northern New England to be named to the list.
The mission of the Best Hospitals list, according to the U.S.News website, is "to identify centers that take on and excel at tough procedures and conditions." U.S.News & World Report reviewed data on more than 5000 hospitals across the country, using criteria such as mortality rates, level of technology, nursing and patient services, and reputation in order to rank the top 50 hospitals in 16 specialties.
"At Norris Cotton Cancer Center, we are committed to providing our community with the latest discoveries and treatments that are changing the future of cancer care," said center director, Mark Israel, MD. "We are proud to once again be recognized by U.S.News & World Report for our efforts."
The Cancer Center continues to lead the region in new technology and therapies for all types of cancer. Recent innovations include the addition of the Trilogy System, which places the center among the top high-technology radiation oncology programs in the country. Trilogy combines specialized imaging with precise and powerful radiation delivery to provide the very latest in high dose, precision radiosurgery and radiation therapy. Also in June, the Bone Marrow Transplant program became an approved Affiliated Transplant Center of the National Marrow Donor Program, making it the only program in Northern New England able to provide a transplant from a donor who is not related to the patient.
In addition to its inclusion on the U.S.News list, Norris Cotton Cancer Center has the distinction of being one of only 39 centers nationwide that has achieved the depth of research and the breadth of expertise required to earn the National Cancer Institute's "Comprehensive Cancer Center" designation.
