Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Norris Cotton Cancer Center Ranks among America's Best in U.S. News 2008 Edition

July 11, 2008

For the seventh consecutive year, Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Norris Cotton Cancer Center is listed in the top 50 cancer facilities in the country in U.S. News & World Report America's Best Hospitals edition. The 2008 edition, which evaluated 5,453 hospitals across the country to compile the top 50 hospitals in 16 specialties, is available online today at www.usnews.com/besthospitals and on newsstands on Monday, July 14.

"Transforming cancer care for our communities is very important to us," said Cancer Center director, Mark Israel, MD. "Our ranking by U.S. News for seven consecutive years underscores our ongoing commitment to our region to deliver the newest technologies and advanced treatment options that make a difference in people's lives."

In 12 of the 16 specialties reported, U.S. News compared hospitals on reputation, death rate, and a set of care-related factors such as nursing and patient services. In the other four reported specialties, the ranking is based solely on reputation, which is derived from physician surveys. "Our rankings highlight the internal culture of excellence embraced by caregivers in the great hospitals throughout the U.S.," said Brian Kelly, editor of U.S. News & World Report.

The 2008 Best Hospitals edition also recognized Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for its gynecology and ENT (ear, nose, and throat) care.

"Dartmouth-Hitchcock is pleased to once again be recognized among America's best healthcare institutions," said hospital president Nancy Formella, MSN, RN. "Our mission is to provide each person the best care, at the right time, every time, and our U.S. News ranking is just one indication that we are on the right track."

"Our vision is to achieve the healthiest population possible and to lead the transformation of health care in our region and our nation," said Thomas Colacchio, MD, President of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic. "We are proud of the physicians, nurses, providers, and staff throughout our organization who work each day to make that vision a reality. They are the reason that DHMC continues to be recognized among the best in the nation, year after year."
