Norris Cotton Cancer Center Ranked Among the Best in the Nation
July 13, 2007
Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is listed among the top 50 hospitals for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report in its 2007 "America's Best Hospitals" issue.
Using a variety of criteria, U.S. News & World Report evaluated 5,462 hospitals nationwide, and only 173 - just over 3 percent - made the Top 50 rankings in 16 different specialty areas. U.S. News & World Report ranked DHMC among the Top 50 nationally for cancer care, digestive disorders, and gynecology.
The 2007 edition marks the sixth consecutive year on the list for Norris Cotton Cancer Center, the only cancer care facility in northern New England to make the list. "We are proud to once again be recognized by U.S. News & World Report. It underscores our commitment to providing the highest level of care for our patients, and effective prevention, screening, and education programs for our region," said Cancer Center director Mark Israel, M.D. Norris Cotton Cancer Center is one of only 41 centers nationwide with the National Cancer Institute's Comprehensive Cancer Center designation.
The goal of the "America's Best Hospitals" rankings, now in their 18th year, is to identify facilities that excel at treating a variety of demanding illnesses and that offer a comprehensive range of procedures within a specialty. According to U.S. News & World Report, most of the medical centers that made this year's list are referral centers, "places accustomed to seeing the toughest patients and conducting bench-to-bedside research that advances the state of the art."
