26th Latchkey Cup Stock Car Race on Ice Raises Money for the Cancer Center

January 15, 2010
Lebanon, NH

Long considered the local "Daytona" of ice racing, the Lakes Region Ice Racing Club is once again gearing up for celebrating the 26th Latchkey Race, a day of stock car racing on ice. The event is January 30 on Moultonborough's Berry Pond and benefits Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Norris Cotton Cancer Center.

"It is an honor to race for the benefit of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center in the Latchkey," says Kirk Alexander of West Swanzey, NH, and the professional driver of #43 Modified. "Latchkey is well-run, fun to watch, and the event helps raise money for cancer research. I encourage everyone to come out for this experience."

Alexander and his A-Team are not only accomplished champions, most recently winning three races in the True Value Racing series, but Alexander's family and crew have experienced first-hand the trauma of cancer and the enormous importance of having Norris Cotton Cancer Center in the region. Alexander lost his brother Tim to cancer in 2008, and a former crew member is currently fighting his own battle with cancer. "Cancer touches everybody's life in some way or another," remarks Alexander. "I'm glad to be at this event to help raise awareness and money for the research that will make a difference in the future."

In addition to Kirk Alexander, special guest drivers this year include: Peter Jarvis, who was awarded 2007 "Rookie of the Year" by the True Value Modified Racing Series (TVMRS); Dwight Jarvis, 2006 Champion of the TVMRS and Race the Tour with TVMRS, finishing sixth in points in 2009; Joey Jarvis, whose racing accomplishments include four Championships and Modified Rookie of the Year; and D.J. Shaw, 2008 Pro All-Star Series "Rookie of the Year."

Over 60 cars will compete in five classes—stock, modified, 4-cylinder front wheel, 4-cylinder rear wheel, and junior (teens, age 13 - 15). The final race of the day will be a face-off between the pros. The event takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Autograph opportunities, food, and souvenir concessions will be available.

Over the past 25 years, the Lakes Region Ice Racing Association has raised over $200,000 for the Cancer Center. In addition to cancer research and patient services, Latchkey monies have funded a room for pediatric oncology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Donations are appreciated, at a suggested minimum of $15 per carload. All proceeds support cancer research and patient services at the Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont.
