51 Dartmouth-Hitchcock Physicians Cited as Top Doctors in NH

New Hampshire Magazine recently named 51 Dartmouth-Hitchcock physicians, spanning 40 different specialties, to its list of the leading physicians in New Hampshire, in the magazine's April edition, on newsstands now.
Earlier this year, New Hampshire Magazine distributed surveys to every physician licensed to practice in the Granite State, asking them to nominate specialists in 45 different categories whom they would recommend to friends and family for treatment. The surveys were then compiled and the top vote getters named as the top doctors and leading physicians in their respective specialties.
The 2012 edition of "Top Doctors" also features Q&A sessions with and cover photographs of six New Hampshire clinicians, including three from Dartmouth-Hitchcock - neonatologist William H. Edwards, MD, ophthalmologist Susan M. Pepin, MD, and pulmonologist William H. Goodman, MD.
Asked about the most rewarding aspect of his work, Edwards recalls recent visits from former child patients now grown. "I had 18-year old twins stop by our Intensive Care Nursery on their way back from college application visits," says Edwards, one of whose two daughters collected her MD from Dartmouth Medical School (DMS) in 2011. "They were born at 24 weeks and weighed roughly 500 and 600 grams at birth. They are articulate and charming young women. (And) a 25-year old previous patient asked to see me when she was visiting her niece who was a patient in our unit. The impact we have on lives is for life - it is humbling." About his selection by fellow neonatologists, he adds, "Recognition by one's colleagues and peers is a high honor for any physician. I am extremely proud of our commitment for nearly 40 years to provide support for high-risk obstetric and newborn care throughout the state. My neonatal and maternal-fetal medicine colleagues share in this recognition."
In her response on the rewards of her profession, Pepin cites "helping a patient to better understand what is going on with their health (or) symptoms, even if it can't be fixed." And she describes that understanding as a two-way street: "Medicine has limitations in what it can do. Sometimes we may fall short of their expectations - not due to any particular failings, but due to the fact that although we can try to improve quality of life, none of us will live forever."
On the subject of the "patient-doctor equation," Goodman says, "I find that the patients who achieve the best outcomes are those that ask questions about their tests and treatments. Following through with a treatment plan is also very important. In addition, I let my patients know that our relationship continues between office visits and how important it is that they provide updates on an ongoing basis." For his part of the equation, Goodman adds his motto: "Be the doctor you would want to care for your own family."
