At Dartmouth-Hitchcock, we believe that experiencing hands-on healing arts, visual art, literary arts, and music can be therapeutic and contribute to a person's sense of well-being. The following are available in our Lebanon, NH location.
Our professional staff of New Hampshire state-licensed massage therapists are available daily to give free 15-minute chair massage sessions. No appointment is necessary. This service is available for patients, family members, and friends when they are visiting Norris Cotton Cancer Center in Lebanon, N.H.; Manchester, N.H.; and St. Johnsbury, VT.
Each session is specifically tailored to the needs of the individual based upon a brief interview with the massage therapist. The massage chair is a piece of equipment that enables people to remain fully clothed and sitting upright during the session. There are special cushions available to ensure a comfortable experience, including people who have a chest port or other sensitive area.
The Creative Arts Program is a collaboration between Dartmouth-Hitchcock Arts, Norris Cotton Cancer Center Support Services, and the Palliative Care Program. The services included within the creative arts program include creative writing, therapeutic harp music and visual arts. The Creative Arts Program receives support from the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center Auxiliary, Friends of Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Hypertherm, The Gertrude Mertens Arts Endowment Fund, Ben Schore, and other private donors. These programs are available at our Lebanon, NH location. Therapeutic Harp Music is also available in the Manchester and St. Johnsbury locations.
Reiki is a gentle, healing technique that promotes comfort and relaxation by treating the whole person — body, mind and spirit. It can help create a sense of peace and well-being by complementing your medical treatment. It is non-intrusive and does not interfere with religious beliefs.
Reiki is given through gentle touch but can be performed without the use of touch. While the client is seated or lying down and fully clothed, the practitioner's hands are placed along the body’s energy centers and pathways. The recipient may feel a number of sensations: warmth, light tingling, coolness. Often a deep sense of relaxation begins during a Reiki session. Benefits of Reiki may include:
- Relaxation and stress reduction
- Temporary relief of pain and muscle tension
- Promotion of the body's self-healing abilities
- A heightened sense of well being
- Patient & Family Support Services
- Oncology Nutrition Services
- Palliative Care
- Sharing Difficult Decisions
