Fifth Annual Dartmouth Integrative Biology Symposium

"Human Microbiome in Health and Disease"

When: May 1 & 2, 2012

Where: Alumni Hall, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH

Overview

The purpose of the symposium is to make the research and medical communities aware of the latest cutting-edge ideas and progress in rapidly evolving areas of biology and translational medicine, and to raise awareness of the exciting advances in integrative biology at Dartmouth.

The theme of this year's Symposium is "Human Microbiome in Health and Disease."

Since the age of Pasteur and Koch, over 100 years ago, the only way to study the microbial world has been to culture purified species. However, the vast majority of microbial species cannot be cultured currently and therefore until now have truly been invisible to research. The recently developed ability to use genomic techniques to identify, quantify, and characterize the microbial species in virtually any sample without culturing purified microorganisms is revolutionary and rapidly transforming our understanding of the microbial world and its influence on human health. It is now quite clear that the microbiome influences a broad swath of human biology that goes far beyond infectious disease. The symposium will bring world leaders in this research to Dartmouth and present the current frontiers of this research area that impacts so much biomedical research.

Understanding the presentations will not require specialized training in microbiology or genomics. The symposium will be of interest to anyone with training in basic biology and an interest in how the microbial world influences human biology. We expect a broad range of attendees from high school students through professional microbiologists and there is no doubt that it will be a very exciting symposium.

Poster session!

Present your latest research results on the evening of Tuesday, May 1, and meet the Symposium speakers. All research projects are welcome. FREE iPads will be awarded to the top three posters. Please indicate on your registration form whether you will be submitting a poster so that we can reserve a poster board for you.
