Patient and Family Resource Library Opening Reception

In April, 2010, Patient and Family Support Services, Radiation Oncology, Hematology Oncology, and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center's Arts Program hosted a celebratory event to acknowledge Norris Cotton Cancer Center's newly refurbished Patient and Family Resource Library on Level 2 of the Cancer Center.

Anita Concilio, RN, Nurse Manager of Radiation Oncology, welcomed the guests, and Madeline Boughter, a volunteer who has overseen the library since 2001, spoke about the history of the Cancer Center library, its new features, and the enlarged book selection. A highlight of the evening were the presentations given by staff of the Creative Arts Program. Introduced by Deborah Steele, Manager of Support Service Programming were Rebecca Gottesman, visual artist with the program; Margaret Stephens, healing harpist; and Marv-Klassen-Landis, creative writer and storyteller. All gave moving testimonials about their interactions with people living with cancer and family members in both the Infusion Suite area and in-patient rooms.

Several people from the community who have received their care at the Cancer Center, and who have worked with staff from the Creative Arts Program read their own newly created and moving poems. Also present at the event was local artist Gary Hamel whose art work-a personal healing journey-lined the walls in the radiation-oncology waiting room.
