Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate the effect of treatment. They are the main way that researchers find out if a new drug, diet or medical device (for example, a pacemaker) is safe and effective for use in people.
Often a clinical trial is used to learn if a new treatment is more effective or has less harmful side effects than the standard treatment currently used. It is the last stage of a long and careful research process.
Talk to your doctor to find out if a clinical trial is right for you.
