Healing Arts: Massage and Reiki
At Dartmouth-Hitchcock, we believe that experiencing hands-on healing arts can be therapeutic and contribute to a person's sense of well-being. The following are available in our Lebanon, NH location.
Our professional staff of New Hampshire state-licensed massage therapists are available daily to give free 15-minute chair massage sessions. No appointment is necessary. This service is available for patients, family members, and friends when they are visiting Norris Cotton Cancer Center in Lebanon, NH; Manchester, NH; Nashua, NH; and St. Johnsbury, VT.
Each session is specifically tailored to the needs of the individual based upon a brief interview with the massage therapist. The massage chair is a piece of equipment that enables people to remain fully clothed and sitting upright during the session. There are special cushions available to ensure a comfortable experience, including people who have a chest port or other sensitive area. Bedside massage is available most weekdays on the inpatient oncology unit at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, please check with your nurse.
Reiki is a gentle, healing technique that promotes comfort and relaxation by treating the whole person — body, mind and spirit. It can help create a sense of peace and well-being by complementing your medical treatment. It is non-intrusive and does not interfere with religious beliefs.
Reiki is given through gentle touch but can be performed without the use of touch. While the client is seated or lying down and fully clothed, the practitioner's hands are placed along the body’s energy centers and pathways. The recipient may feel a number of sensations: warmth, light tingling, coolness. Often a deep sense of relaxation begins during a Reiki session. Benefits of Reiki may include:
- Relaxation and stress reduction
- Temporary relief of pain and muscle tension
- Promotion of the body's self-healing abilities
- A heightened sense of well being
