Dartmouth Cancer Center (DCC) announced that Edward Kaftan, PhD, will join the organization as the associate director for administration and scientific affairs.

Kaftan will have lead responsibility at Dartmouth for Cancer Center research administration and its role in fulfilling the Center’s National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. He will serve on DCC senior leadership and direct the administrative team supporting cancer research initiatives.

His responsibilities will include advancing faculty collaborations across four cancer-related, multidisciplinary programs; overseeing access to clinical trials, shared research resources and developmental funding; supporting cancer research education and training; and community outreach and engagement.

Kaftan comes to Dartmouth most recently from Yale Cancer Center, where he served as associate director for administration. He brings more than 20 years of experience in biomedical research and drug discovery.

At DCC, Kaftan succeeds Robert Gerlach, MPA, who is retiring after 19 years at DCC. Gerlach’s more than 50-year career spanned eight NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center designations, including his work supporting the initial recognition of new centers in Buffalo, New York and Cleveland, Ohio.

Kaftan will begin his new role on October 1.
