2024 Prouty raises over $8 million for cancer research, support services

2024 Prouty

The Prouty, Dartmouth Cancer Center’s premier annual fundraiser, brought the community together in an unprecedented show of support in the fight against cancer, surpassing this year’s goal of $8 million to fund critical cancer research and patient support services.

The family-friendly event, known for its inclusive atmosphere and wide range of activities, saw participation from more than 4,500 individuals this year, underscoring its significance within the community and its impact on cancer care. This year’s Prouty featured traditional favorite events such as walking, biking and rowing on Saturday, July 13. In an exciting update, a mountain biking event was introduced, drawing in an enthusiastic crowd eager to ride the trails for a good cause. The always well-attended golf event took place on June 15, in addition to a fun walk event in St. Johnsbury, VT.

Despite concerns about potential rain, the weather remained favorable, adding to the success of the day’s activities. Support from the community was overwhelming, with dozens of local businesses stepping up to sponsor the event, contribute generous donations and provide on-site support. The collaborative spirit of the event illustrated the community’s united front against cancer and the collective hope for a future free from the disease.

“The Prouty is a testament to the power of community and the shared commitment to ending cancer,” said Steven D. Leach, MD, Director of Dartmouth Cancer Center. “The funds raised will help the newest innovations and promising ideas coming out of our research labs to get off the ground, bringing us closer to breakthroughs that will save lives. They will also provide complementary patient care services that help to ease what can be a very difficult journey for our patients. We are deeply moved by the outpouring of support and grateful to everyone who participated, donated, and volunteered.”

Jaclynn Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Friends of Dartmouth Cancer Center, who organizes The Prouty, added, “Seeing the community come together in such a powerful way is truly inspiring. The success of The Prouty speaks volumes about the compassion and dedication of our participants, supporters, and local businesses. Each year, we are reminded of the difference we can make when we unite for a common cause. Thank you to all who made this year’s event a resounding success.”

This year's ambitious goal of $8 million was set with intentions of dedicating $1 million to advancing cancer precision prevention research. The goal of precision cancer prevention is to stop cancer before it even starts. Funds raised at The Prouty will directly support Dartmouth Cancer Center researchers in their efforts to develop new tools and innovations to map any individual's risk factors for cancer and create bold new strategies to reduce those risks.

The Prouty stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the strength found in unity. As the Dartmouth Cancer Center continues to make progress in cancer research and patient care as one of the nation’s leading cancer centers as designated by the National Cancer Institute, the funds and awareness raised through The Prouty play a crucial role in advancing the mission to conquer cancer.
