Innovate, Elevate, Celebrate: The Power of Advanced Practice Providers

Elizabeth McGrath, APRN

If you or someone you know is receiving treatment for any type of cancer, then you may not even realize it, but an APP has been right by your side the whole time.

What is an APP?

APP stands for “Advanced Practice Provider,” which includes Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN), and Physician Assistants (PA).

In oncology, APPs improve outcomes for patients with cancer and their families by increasing healthcare access, promoting clinical excellence, improving patients’ quality of life, documenting patient outcomes, and making care more cost effective.  APPs have advanced clinical knowledge and skills that prepare them to provide direct and indirect care to patients. They are responsible for promoting and maintaining our patients’ health, as well as assessing, diagnosing, and managing problems, concerns or questions our patients have.

APPs work closely with the oncologists and everyone on a patient’s care team. A team approach to cancer treatment offers the best hope for our patients’ outcomes and quality of life, during treatment and well into survivorship.

Every year during the fourth week of September, we celebrate APPs who elevate the fields of medicine and nursing to ensure our patients and communities receive safe, high-quality, evidence-based care. This year’s theme is  "Innovate, Elevate, Celebrate: The Power of APPs." If you are at Dartmouth Cancer Center in Lebanon this week, please take a moment to view the individual APP posters displayed throughout the Cancer Center to understand what has drawn our APPs to cancer care.

This celebratory week and all year round, we at Dartmouth Cancer Center thank our APPs for their unique contributions to the care and support of our patients and the unique role they play in our clinical teams:
