Real-Time Diagnosis for Brain Tumors

Chun-Chieh Lin, MD, PhD
Dartmouth Health pathologist Chun-Chieh Lin, MD, PhD, led development of a new method that speeds up diagnosis of brain tumor type to help patients get the right treatments sooner.

Every minute matters when it comes to cancer care—and for patients facing a possible brain tumor diagnosis, those early minutes can feel like a lifetime. Traditional testing methods often require weeks to return results, delaying critical decisions about treatment. But thanks to pioneering work at Dartmouth, that wait may soon be a thing of the past.

In a new story from Vitals Magazine, researchers at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth introduce a novel diagnostic technique called iSCORED that can identify brain tumor types in a matter of hours, even while surgery is still in progress. Knowing the type of tumor is essential in forming effective treatment plans.
