Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Cancer Registry

The Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) Cancer Registry collects important cancer-related information. We collect details on cancer site, histology, and stage as well as patient demographics, treatment, cancer therapies, follow-up, and survival data.

Data collection

We identify and confirm new cancer cases and enter them in a sophisticated, secure database. DHMC Cancer Registry staff reviews the medical record to collect important information about the diagnosis, further cancer staging, and all phases of treatment. All patients are followed annually for updated reporting of recurrence, treatment, and vital status.

Impact

The Registry was established in 1958 and has reported our cancer cases to the New Hampshire State Cancer Registry (NHSCR) as required by law since 1986. The National Cancer Database, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and American Cancer Society all use this information. They calculate such statistics as incidence and prevalence. Cancer researchers at Dartmouth and around the world use our data to learn more about cancer, develop new treatments, and prevent cancer.

Information in the DHMC Cancer Registry is summarized according to standardized rules for data collection, including quality edits as prescribed by the National Program of Cancer Registrars and the regulations specified by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACOS CoC). The information contained in the registry is also critical to calculations of analytic and non-analytic cancer incidence across all organs and sites seen at Dartmouth Health facilities. The tabulations of these cases are important and are included in the Dartmouth Cancer Center’s annual NCI reporting and NCI certification renewal reporting requirements.

The DHMC Cancer Registry provides useful, accurate, and timely information to DHMC investigators, administrators, and clinicians. We have several "standard" reports available within our registry software. We are also able to write reports addressing specific criteria and parameters. Contact us to learn more.
